Q & A
1. What is Toastmasters International?
Toastmaster International is the leading movement devoted to making effective oral communication a worldwide reality. Through its member clubs in 107 countries, with a quarter of a million members, Toastmasters International helps men and women learn the arts of speaking, listening, and thinking --- vital skills that promote self-actualization and enhance leadership potential.
2. What is a Toastmasters club?
A Toastmasters club is a place that provides a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.
3. What do you usually do in a club meeting?
Generally our meeting is made up by 3 parts: Table Topics session = impromptu speaking, prepared Speech Delivering session, and Evaluation Giving session. Of course, a meeting will always have an opening and closing.
a. The meeting will start with opening remarks from President. Then he/she will bring out the TME(Toastmaster of the Evening) to conduct the whole meeting.
b. TME will introduce evaluation team to introduce their roles.
c. Then start the Table Topics which is conducted by a Table Topics Master. He/she will give out questions based on the theme, any interested member or guest can go to the stage to deliver an answer in a speech form within 2 minutes.
d. In Speech Delivering, there will be 2 to 4 prepared speeches.
e. After the speech session, there will be corresponding evaluators to give evaluation to the speeches. Then it’s followed by time, grammar report, etc.
f. Meeting will end with closing remarks from President.
4. As a guest, what can I do at the meeting?
You can first listen and watch how we run the meeting. If you know how it runs, you can take part in the Table Topics session by answering an impromptu question in the form of a 2-minute speech. After the meeting, during drinks, you can talk to anyone, get to know the people and ask members any remaining questions.
5. As a new member, what can I do at the meeting?
If you are still a little timid in taking any roles, you can start with the short 2-minute speech in Table Topics session. This will kill off your nervousness little by little. If you find Table Topics speech is too hard for you (actually it is always hard for anybody), you can try some simple roles first, such as the ah-counter. Of course, you need to do your homework first, that is, to read the manual and learn how to perform these rolls.
6. When & where do you have the club meetings?
Usually from 19:30 for 8 o’clock. Look at the website of the club.
7. How much do I need to pay for enrolling in your club?
If you have not joined any Toastmasters club before, you need to pay Euro 20,= as entrance fee. You’ll receive the first two manuals.
The yearly club-fee is between Euro 70 to 100, depending on the club, on the venue they have, etc..
Of that amount Euro 40+ is for membership registration at Toastmaster International, California.
8.
Could Networkmarketeers be members and try to sell their
products at Toastmasters?
People working in MLM, Multi Level Marketing, could in principle
be members of Toastmasters. They will be asked however to
refrain from making overt publicity or selling during our meetings
or even trying to get appointments for a later date.
If they do, they will be asked to leave the Club.
