Many years ago, in Ancient Greece when Demosthenes wanted to learn how to speak properly he put pebbles in his mouth. Fortunately today we do not have to go to such extremes to learn how to communicate effectively, we can join Toastmasters.

Toastmasters is the worlds leading organisation dedicated to helping its members learn how to communicate more effectively. Why is Toastmasters so successful? Toastmasters is not a school with teachers lecturing and handing out marks at the end of term but rather a club where interesting people like you help each other and learn together in a friendly and supportive environment. Ask members why they come to Toastmasters and you will hear “ because it works and it’s fun” Being able to express ones thoughts clearly is one of the most valuable things we can ever learn. It doesn’t matter where we are, we need to be able to explain what we mean.

Just think about how much easier your life would be if you could: convince your boss that you have the good idea; your partner to go to the Alps instead of going to mothers for Christmas; or a store clerk that the earth will really open up and swallow the whole store if they don’t take this thing back. A Toastmaster Club provides its members with a professionally designed programme to improve their speaking ability and to express their thoughts, ideas, and opinions more clearly. The meetings include “Table Topics” which give members the opportunity to practice “on-the-spot” speaking. Prepared talks provide experience in organising effective speeches to inform, persuade or entertain an audience. These speeches follow the Toastmasters Communication and Leadership Manual which guides the member through a series of projects which work on different skills required to become an effective communicator. Constructive evaluation, a vital part of Toastmasters training, gives the speaker the audiences reaction and helps other members develop the ability to listen critically and analytically.
